Agenda & Outcome

Agenda

  1. Contain France: Surround France with buffer countries to prevent future aggression.
  2. Restore Balance of Power: Redraw the map of Europe to ‘equally’ distribute influence.
  3. Restore Monarchs: Affirm Metternich’s principle of legitimacy to stabilize political relations.
  4. Suppress Nationalism: Redraw European borders with no regard to ethnic/national boundaries.

Outcome

  1. Balance of power survived nearly a century.
  2. Concert of Europe: Group of leading nations which periodically met to discuss issues regarding stability.
  3. France’s size and power diminished; Britain and Prussia’s power increased.
  4. Temporary suppression of democratic and nationalistic ideals; Nationalism rises in areas under foreign control (especially Italy, Germany and Greece), spurring later revolutions.
  5. Overseas colonies take advantage of the power shift to declare independence.
